The Barrett Retrospective

This blog represents my own footprint on the web, and everything contained herein is my own, illustrious opinion.

Godzilla Showa Series

In 1954, the Japanese film company, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toho Toho Co., Ltd. released its most famous worldwide creation: Godzilla. Below, you will find a catalog of all the Showa Series Godzilla films, from 1954 to 1975. I have also included links to where you can buy these amazing films.

Gojira (1954)

This is the film that started it all. The first Godzilla film from Toho. Both original Japanese version and the Americanized versions of this classic film is now available from Amazon. The film was recently transferred to Blu Ray and is available at Amazon. Classic Media is importing original Japanese versions of all Godzilla films as the rights revert back to Toho. So not all films are available from them. You can buy the Class Media Godzilla Collection Box Set from Amazon.

Godzilla Raids Again (1955)

Godzilla Raids Again is available in both Japanese and American versions in one DVD. Original Japanese version is available from Amazon. Classic Media Released: November 7, 2006

King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962)

Unfortunately, the Japanese version of this film is not yet available in the US. The American version is available from Amazon. Godzilla vs. Megalon (1973)

This film has been listed on Amazon for years in both Blu Ray and DVD format. Unfortunately, it was never actually released. The links below will take you to the Amazon pages, perhaps this classic film will become available some day. True story: When it was first announced, I purchased a pre-order on Amazon. About a year later, I requested my money back. That was a sad day indeed. Sometimes, used copies on VHS can still be found for sale on Amazon. It might be worth checking out once in a while. Mystery Science Theater: 3000 also released their riff of this film, but it seems to only be available as used. Find it used on Amazon.

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974)

Who can resist Mechagodzilla? Original Japanese version is available from Sony Pictures. You can buy it direct from Amazon. Sony Pictures Released: October 19, 2004

Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975)

By far, one of my personal all-time favorite Godzilla films, Terror of Mechagodzilla is the last film of the Showa Series. Original Japanese version is available from Amazon. This DVD also comes with a special English-dubbed edition with additional scenes. Classic Media Released on January 15, 2008.
