I found a way (finally!) to remove ICQ search as the default.
A long time ago, I installed ICQ. It did some things to my PC that I did not like, so I uninstalled it. However, some of the changes lingered. One of those changes was the default search engine in Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox and re installed, but that didn’t fix it. If you ask me, ICQ is a virus or malware. But nonetheless, without a fix I permanently removed Firefox because I refused to use ICQ search.
Recently, I had need to use Firefox’s Firebug javascript debugger. I re installed it and lo and behold, the ICQ search was still set as default! Here is how I removed it.
- Go to Tools->Addons and find the ICQ Toolbar and uninstall it.
- Open a new tab in FireFox
- Type about:config in the address bar
- Type keyword.URL to find the entry
- Right click on it and choose reset or
- click modify change that entry to http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q= to return to the normal Google search.
