A Wii Homecoming

You would not believe how difficult it is to find a Wii. People start lining up at BestBuy and GameStop at 7am just to get their hands on one. That’s impressive for a video game console that is now almost 2 years old. Most impressive!

We just had to get one.

News, Weather, Internet, Photos, Videos, e-mail. Oh, and it plays games too.Sunday, March 30. We started by looking online. Did you know that there are resellers still trying to get $600.00 for a new Wii? Well, let me tell you that a brand new Wii costs only $250.00. (Xbox and PS3 are still selling at $350.00+). So, it was off to BestBuy at the Mall to find a Wii. They didn’t have any, but oddly enough they are still selling brand new Playstation 2 consoles. I wonder why they aren’t selling? We tried WalMart. They didn’t have any. We went to Target. We knew they didn’t have any because there was a guy in front of us asking “Hey you got any Wiis?” and the clerk said they hadn’t had any in a long time. So we decided to check some other places the next evening after work.

Monday, March 31st. April Fools Day was early. We went back to BestBuy and asked someone if they had any Wiis. The answer was no, but he was kind enough to look up the inventory of a couple other BestBuy stores nearby. There was one about 10 miles away, but he recommended we have someone at the customer service desk call them to verify. The anticipation was building. The woman at the desk made the call, dialed wrong, had to hang up and dial again. This time someone answered. “Hi, yes we have a customer here looking a a Wii. Do you have any?”. Then a pause. “Oh, I see,OK, thanks” (well? well?) She looked at us and said “I’m sorry, they sold out”. Well, it was worth a try.
Next stop GameStop! We walked out of BestBuy and down to GameStop. They had plenty of Xboxes and Playstations, but no Wiis. We decided to ask. The man at the desk told us that usually as soon as they get a shipment, people start lining up and they are gone within an hour. He also told us they were getting a shipment in the next day. He gave us a card and said we can call to check.
At this point we had to make a decision. Were we going to give up and wait for a Wii? Or were we going to be amongst the Wii-wanabes lining up to get their fair share? Damned right we were!

Tuesday, April 1st. Kecia, being the devoted, kind soul that she is, and working 20 minutes from the Mall, took on the vigilant role of GameStop Phone Liaison. That was a hard day for me being at the office. The waiting, the anticipation, sneeking some internet time to look up all the games I wanted to play and reading about wii-mote safety straps, nunchuck controllers, GameCube compatibility. Wow, I wanted a Wii more and more. GameStop was due to get a shipment around 2pm, but it was late. Kecia kept in constant contact with them and kept me informed with the latest news. Then it happened: At 4pm they got a shipment of Wiis in. By 4:30 they were all gone. At 4:35 I received a phone call at work. It was Kecia. We had a Wii. No Foolin’.

That evening we played Bowling. It was the best game I had ever played in my entire life. 🙂

If you are thinking about getting a Wii, stop thinking. Just do it. You will love it.
