The Perfect Sugar Cookie Recipe

If you’re craving soft, buttery sugar cookies with the perfect hint of brown sugar, you’re in the right place! This recipe is simple, delicious, and uses cream of tartar for a wonderfully tender texture. No molasses, no unsalted butter—just pure cookie perfection from ingredients you already have in the house.

Ingredients

1 cup salted butter, softened

1 cup granulated sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Cream the Butter and Sugars
In a large mixing bowl, cream together the salted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy. This should take about 2-3 minutes with a hand mixer or stand mixer.
  3. Add the Wet Ingredients
Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix—this ensures a soft and tender cookie.
  6. Shape the Cookies
Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
  7. Optional Step for Flatter Cookies
For a flatter cookie, gently press down on each dough ball with the bottom of a glass or your fingers.
  8. Bake to Perfection
Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Avoid overbaking—they’ll continue to set as they cool!
  9. Cool and Enjoy
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
