What’s Up Doc?

My assignment for this class was to experiment with story structure while maintaining escalating tension. The plot had to involve a visit to the doctor. So, I sat at my desk and let my mind soar. This story is the result.

On my 45th birthday, I flew on an airplane to 8,000 feet, opened the door, and stepped out. My fear of heights had plagued me through out my life. In college, all my friends went sky diving one weekend but I was too afraid to go. Now, I decided it was time to face my fears. The free fall was supposed to last 20 seconds before opening the parachute. At 19 seconds, just as I was about to pull the cord, I collided with a bird. Feathers filled my helmet and I panicked. Unable to see, I flailed around trying to find the cord. Finally I grabbed it and pulled. Less than a minute later, I hit the ground, breaking both legs. I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. I woke up just in time to meet the ER doctor. She reset the broken bones in my legs and I passed out again. When I woke up again, I had two big casts on my legs.
